Turmeric, ground
Turmeric is also referred to as Gelbwurz (yellow spice), and that’s no coincidence. In its country of origin, India, the yellow-orange color is ubiquitous – for example in the spicy curry blends that exude their aromas. Turmeric has a mildly spicy, earthy and slightly bitter taste. As a natural food coloring agent, the yellow spice is much cheaper than saffron and colors rice dishes such as Spanish paella. In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric, which is considered to have a strong antioxidant effect, has been known as a medicinal plant for over 3,000 years.
